The weather Update (MeT) predictions: Check Details

The Jammu and Kashmir region is bracing for a series of active weather systems as the MeT department (Meteorological Department) forecasts multiple Western Disturbances bringing rain and snowfall in the coming days.

This could mark one of the more significant winter spells of the season so far, especially with widespread snowfall expected in higher and middle reaches starting later this month.

According to the latest updates from the Srinagar Meteorological Department, a weak Western Disturbance is already influencing the area, leading to light snowfall in higher elevations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and major mountain passes from late afternoon onward.

The Kashmir Valley plains are mostly seeing cloudy skies, with chances of very light rain or isolated light snow. This initial system is short-lived and not very intense, so expect only minor dips in daytime temperatures and slight drops at night in snowy spots.

Looking ahead, a moderate Western Disturbance is predicted to arrive between January 19 and January 21, potentially delivering more widespread light to moderate precipitation including snow in upper areas and rain or mixed conditions in lower elevations.

The most notable activity is expected from a stronger Western Disturbance influencing Jammu and Kashmir between January 22 and January 26. This could bring widespread snowfall across higher and middle reaches of the Kashmir Valley, along with possible heavy falls in specific zones like parts of the Chenab Valley, Pir Panjal range, and south Kashmir districts (especially around January 23-24).

Some forecasts suggest moderate to heavy rain or snow in select areas, which might lead to temporary disruptions on key highways, mountain passes, and travel routes.

The MeT has advised residents, particularly in higher reaches, to stay prepared for rapidly changing conditions over the next week or so. Travelers should monitor official advisories, as stronger spells could cause road blockages, landslides in vulnerable spots, or reduced visibility. Farmers and locals are urged to take precautions during peak wet periods.

This active phase comes amid ongoing Chillai Kalan the harshest 40-day winter period in Kashmir, which typically sees the season's best snowfall chances. While earlier parts of January have been relatively dry in the plains, these incoming systems could help build the snowpack in alpine areas, benefiting water resources later in the year.
