J&K Government Plans to Revive Half of Frozen Teacher Posts: Check Details
The government is seriously considering unfreezing 50% of the General Line Teacher (GLT) positions that have been on hold since 2018.
Back then, the State Administrative Council (SAC) froze 6,576 of these posts to cover salaries for Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers. Now, it seems like a change is in the works to address the teacher shortage in schools.
This move comes after a meeting on June 25, 2025, led by Education Minister Sakina Itoo. She directed the School Education Department to put together a proposal to thaw out half of these frozen posts, which would extend the timeline for managing them from 2029 to 2034.
The freeze on these positions, along with a lack of recruitment for nearly a decade, has left schools struggling with staff shortages. On top of that, the absorption of around 39,461 former Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers into the department back in the day blocked new hires for years.
Unfreezing these posts could be a game-changer, paving the way for more teachers to join and ease the strain on schools.
Minister Itoo also pushed for filling other vacant roles, like Chief Education Officers (CEOs), Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs), Principals, and Headmasters, as soon as possible. She set a deadline of July 31, 2025, for filling promotion-quota vacancies across all levels and getting proposals ready for the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC). It’s clear the government is trying to tackle the staffing crisis head-on and get the education system back on track.
