Major Shift in J&K Higher Education: CUET Scrapped for UG Admissions 2026–27
Based on recent reports by Higher Education Department, J&K
In a major policy shift, the Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education Department has decided to discontinue the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate admissions in all Government Degree Colleges (GDCs) for the 2026–27 academic session.
Why is the Government Reverting to Merit-Based Admissions?
The decision comes in response to a significant drop in student enrollment across various colleges. Recent data revealed a "no takers" crisis in several institutions:
- Zero Enrollment: Colleges like GDC Baghi Dilawar Khan and GDC Chattisinghpora reported no active students by March 2026.
- Low Enrolment: Over 13 colleges have fewer than 30 students, while 24 colleges are functioning with less than 100 students.
- Logistical Barriers: Students in remote areas faced difficulties with CUET due to geographical location and lack of digital infrastructure.
Key Updates for the 2026–27 Session
The Higher Education Department has issued these guidelines in advance to help parents and students prepare:
- Non-CUET Admissions: Entrance scores are no longer mandatory for GDCs in Jammu & Kashmir.
- Centralized Portal: All candidates must register and apply through a single centralized admission portal.
- Preference System: College allotment will be based on your 10+2 merit and selected preferences.
